The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK arrives during 2009 to give the German manufacturer a boldly styled rival for the BMW X3 and Land Rover LR3, as well as the 2008 Infiniti EX35 and 2009 Audi Q5.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK, its exterior heavily disguised with black tape but its interior in near-production form, was shown last August to a small group of automotive journalists, including Consumer Guide.

The GLK prototype was a five-passenger 4-door wagon. It was about as long as an X3, but noticeably wider and somewhat lower. Its shape was camouflaged, but appeared to favor square-cut lines and a boxy nose, more in the spirit of Mercedes' GL-Class full-size SUV or the LR3 rather than the more flowing contours of the Mercedes M-Class midsize SUV or such premium-compact SUV newcomers as the EX35.

"It doesn't look so much smaller than the M-Class, even though it is smaller, because of the boxy, edgy design language," said Volker Hellwig, GLK design project manager.

Mercedes said the prototype's dashboard was in near-final form. It consists of a sporty assembly of main gauges set before the driver. Jutting forms separate a series of blocky modules that house groupings of controls. The dashtop on the prototype was black and the instrument panel was of light-toned grained material set off by aluminum trim.

"It's not as soft as other cars we have," Hellwig said of the cabin styling. "It's more edgy, more boxy."

Mercedes officials on hand at the closed-door preview declined to discuss the GLK's technical details. Speculation has the GLK based on a C-Class station wagon chassis modified to furnish more ground clearance. The GLK won't be equipped for serious off-roading.

The probable engine is a 268-horsepower V6 for a GLK350. Mercedes is almost sure to also offer a diesel-powered model in the U.S., but probably not at launch. "Why wouldn't we offer diesel if we have a diesel and people want diesel?" said Hellwig.

The disguised version shown to journalists had 20-inch-diameter alloy wheels and running boards integrated into the lower body sides. Its license plate read "GLK Class."

Noting the lead time required to bring a vehicle to market, Hellwig said the styling of the production GLK was in near-final form under the black paper and tape. "We're pretty much where we want to be," he said.

Mercedes showed the covered-up GLK to groups of auto writers in Europe and at a recent U.S. preview of its 2008 ML550 and GL550 models. The U.S. journalists were prohibited from taking cameras or cell phones into the preview room.

Since we were shown the prototype, Mercedes released photos of the Vision GLK FREESIDE, a concept that was displayed at the 2008 Detroit auto show. Mercedes said this study vehicle was close to series production.

The Vision GLK FREESIDE is powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, that Mercedes says is good for about 170 horsepower. The engine features the BLUETEC emission control system, and it is claimed the engine would not have trouble meeting strict U.S. emissions standards. At this time though, it is unclear if this 4-cylinder diesel will be offered in the U.S.

Mercedes finally displayed the production GLK in April 2008 at the Bejing auto show. The U.S.-market version is the GLK350, and will be available with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. Both models are shod with standard 19-inch wheels and tires. The company also plans to offer optional 20-inch rolling stock.

Optional equipment should include a panoramic sunroof and a hard drive-equipped navigation system with a backup camera and the company's COMAND multimedia interface system. An upgraded full-leather interior will also be available.

The Mazda RX-8 is a compact sportscar with a unique engine configuration and an unusual passenger layout. The RX-8 is powered by a Wankel rotary engine and follows a long line of Mazda models (including the respected RX-7) powered by rotary engines. Furthermore, even though it has a very coupelike profile, the RX-8 has seating for four along with two small backdoors that are hinged at the back.

For 2009, the RX-8 gets some minor alterations to improve performance and ride quality, several new features, and subtle styling changes inside and out; furthermore, a new high-end R3 model joins the lineup, adding a track-ready appearance and more performance goodies.

Even five years after its introduction, the Mazda RX-8 still has an exterior design that turns heads. The low-slung coupe has a rather long, low hoodline and lipped wheel wells that help accentuate sporty wheel designs and low-profile performance tires. Especially notable is the RX-8's rakish side profile, with rear glass that continues the same smooth arc of the roofline to meet the rear decklid. For 2009, there are a number of minor changes on the outside, including turn signal lamps that have been integrated into larger headlamps units, a redesigned front fascia and grille, and a slightly different tail lamp design.

The interior has a unified low-slung, cckpit-centric appearance, with a matte-metallic-trimmed center console that runs from the instrument panel all the way back. The instrument panel flows smoothly. Generously bolstered front seats provide plenty of comfort and support, along with enough space for taller adults, but the two rear bucket seats are only for kids. The 2009 RX-8 Mazda also gets freshened a bit inside, with a new steering wheel design, a more smoothly contoured instrument panel, and improved materials.

Most noteworthy are the backdoors; they're shorter and hinged at the back, and opened together with the front doors allow impressive access. However, entry and exit for backseat occupants is still difficult; adults need to contort a bit to get into position, and they must especially watch their heads, as the low roofline curves downward at the back. While the seating position in the 2009 Mazda RX-8 is rather low, there's plenty of headroom to afford an upright driving position, so outward visibility isn't an issue, as it is in some other sportscars.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is powered by a compact but potent 1.3-liter, twin-rotor engine, making 232 horsepower with the standard six-speed manual transmission but detuned to 212 horsepower with the available six-speed Sport A/T automatic transmission.

The automatic transmission available in the 2009 Mazda RX-8 includes steering-wheel paddle-shifters, but the standard six-speed manual gearbox is the best choice of the two. The stick has very short throws and snicks neatly into each gear, with a light and progressive clutch. It's also the way to get the most enjoyment out of the rotary engine, which needs to rev high to take advantage of the power on tap and the great steering and maneuverability.

The engine has a throaty and mild-mannered sound in leisurely driving, but at full wail, it develops the urgent tone of a speed bike. Fortunately, if you tire of the sounds, you can simply shift up to sixth gear and cruise in relative quiet. One downside, no matter which transmission, is fuel economy; with an EPA city fuel economy rating of 16 mpg, the 2009 Mazda RX-8 is far from frugal.

Outside of the novel personality of the rotary engine and the odd backseat arrangement, the very low center of mass and go-kart-like feel on the road are the main selling points for the 2009 Mazda RX-8. You're low and close to the road and don't need to double speed limits to have fun. The front tires keep a tenacious grip, the body rarely leans, and the quick ratio and the electric-boost steering unwind nicely and bring good feedback. The ride can be a bit jittery on uneven surfaces, but in all, it's a very fun, precise car to drive.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is offered in four different models: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and R3. Even base Sport models come with power accessories, air conditioning, keyless entry, and attractive alloy wheels, but Grand Touring models pile on extras like HID headlamps, fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, upgraded sound systems, a Bluetooth interface, and a keyless start system.

The high-performance 2009 Mazda RX-8 R3 gets a sport-tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks, and high-performance tires on 19-inch wheels, along with foam-filled front-suspension crossmembers, which help quiet the stiffer ride and aid control. It also comes with wider side sills, forged alloy wheels finished in a smoky gray hue, a 300-watt Bose Centerpoint sound system, and a Bluetooth interface.

The insurance-based IIHS has not crash-tested the 2009 Mazda RX-8, but NHTSA rates the RX-8's frontal protection with four and five stars, and gives it four stars for side-impact protection. Both side airbags and head-protecting side-curtain bags covering the driver and front passenger positions are standard, but neither of the side airbags covers rear-occupant positions. Electronic stability control comes standard in Touring, Grand Touring, and R3 models, but it's not available on the base Sport—a model that should be avoided by those who drive on wintry roads. One advantage of the RX-8's very low center of mass and wide stance is its very slight chance of rollover; it's one of the few vehicles to get the top five-star rollover rating from the federal government.

The 2010 Hyundai Genesis sedan should see no major changes following its introduction for the 2009 model year. Hyundai's largest car offers two engines: a 290-hp 3.8-liter V6 for the 3.8; and a 375-hp 4.6-liter V8 for the 4.6. A new base model with a 3.3-liter V6 may join the sedan lineup sometime in the model year. Due later in model-year 2010 is the Genesis coupe. It's based on a shortened sedan platform and will be powered by a new turbocharged 4-cylinder or the 3.8-liter V6 shared with the sedan. Power estimates are at least 200 hp for the 4-cylinder and more than 300 for the V6. All sedan engines team with a 6-speed automatic transmission that has a manual shift gate. The coupes will offer a 6-speed manual as well as an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, front side airbags, and rear side airbags. Among the available sedan features are heated and cooled driver seat, wireless cell phone link, a navigation system with hard drive for storing digital music files, rearview camera, and front- and rear-obstacle detection. The Genesis sedan has a knob in the center console that governs audio, navigation, and other functions. Adaptive cruise control is available. This evaluation is based on preview test drives of the 2009 Genesis sedan.

Fuel-stingy minicars are back in vogue, thanks to escalating gas prices. Ford has long promised such a car for its U.S. lineup. In fact, it had one ready several years back, but canceled it on learning the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris would show up.

Since then, the Blue Oval has been working on what it thinks will be a more competitive minicar. Though Ford isn’t talking timetable or specifications yet, the three Verve concepts, unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, and 2008 Detroit Auto Show suggest the showroom version is well on the road to completion. So does the debut of a new Mazda 2, which will parent the U.S. baby as well as a redesign of Ford’s popular European Fiesta. Right now, sources predict the American version--which will be badged Fiesta--will arrive in 2010 as a 2011 model.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta is another “world car” project a la Ford’s 1981 Escort and 2000 Focus. Like the original VW Beetle, the idea is a basic design that can be built and sold profitably the world over, because one car serving many markets drastically cuts development costs and raises profit potential. That’s why General Motors still dabbles with world cars, too.

In the past, though, Detroit “world cars” ended up with so many regional design and engineering changes that economies of scale were diminished, if not erased. The Focus is one example. At first, the U.S. and European models were quite similar. Then Ford Europe did a 2005 redesign that U.S. marketers deemed too costly. In other words, a Euro-based Focus would have been priced out of its U.S. market slot. Which is why our Focus still uses the original design, already paid for, albeit heavily updated for 2008.

Ford says Focus will be a “world car” again in its next incarnation, expected around 2011. There’s not much choice. Ford is running very low on cash and must leverage its global resources--that timeworn Detroit cliché--to get the most new model bang for the bucks it has. That’s why Ford CEO Alan Mullaly is busy spearheading a global product plan that aims for big savings by greatly trimming the number of platforms and parts in Ford Motor’s worldwide inventory. The increased sharing won’t be confined to small cars, either. Ford also plans to merge two different midsize sedans, the American Fusion and European Mondeo, into a single basic design, with only modest tailoring for various markets.

All this explains why the 2011 Ford Fiesta will be closely related to the next-generation Fiesta, but possibly sourced from low-wage Brazil or Mexico to achieve a competitive El Norte price. And because Ford now assigns small-car development to Japanese affiliate Mazda, which is plenty experienced that way, the Fiesta will be derived from the recently-released second-generation Mazda 2. That model isn’t coming here, but its good U.K. and Continental notices bode well for the North American Ford.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta will share a new B2E corporate platform with the Mazda 2, but have different styling (penned by Ford designers in Europe) and perhaps different powertrains too. It will look more conservative than the Verve concept, which Ford says suggests the general “design language” of the production car. But the concept is certainly expressive, as is the wedgy Mazda 2, so the showroom Fiesta won’t be another plain two-box appliance like the Fiesta sold here way back in 1977-1980.

Size wise, the 2011 Ford Fiesta should be close to the Fit, Yaris, Chevrolet Aveo and other so-called “B-Class” minicars, but a generous wheelbase versus overall length should make for a surprisingly roomy four-seater, judging by the Mazda 2. It’s front-wheel drive, of course, and a 4-door sedan body style is assured for the U.S. Two- and 4-door hatchbacks are likely for Europe and possibly for our side of the pond as well.

Powertrains should come from the Mazda 2, which in various markets offers twincam 4-cylinder engines of 1.3 and 1.5 liters. We’d guess the U.S. 2011 Ford Fiesta will get the 1.5 at least, or perhaps a 1.8-liter enlargement providing the extra low-end torque that’s always so helpful for U.S. driving conditions. Transmissions should comprise a 5-speed manual and an optional 5-speed automatic, also per the 2. Standard equipment should include antilock brakes, front torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Traction control will certainly be available, maybe even standard. Stability control is a likely option, as it is on the Mazda.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Ford Fiesta

Depending on marketers’ courage, the 2011 Ford Fiesta may offer upscale extras like sport suspension, 16- or 17-inch tires to replace standard 15s, power windows, keyless power door locks, perhaps even a navigation system. The options list will almost certainly show the new Ford Sync system for voice-activated control of cell phones and portable music players, if only to court the youth market. An available 5-speed automatic would be a competitive advantage among B-Class cars, where 4-speed transmissions are the rule so far. Let’s also note that the latest Mazda 2 weighs some 220 pounds less than the previous version, which bodes well for both performance and fuel economy in the 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Buying Advice for the 2011 Ford Fiesta

B-Class competition is heating up fast. Suzuki now offers sedan and hatchback versions of its little SX4; Toyota’s Scion brand has replaced its small xA hatchback with the more-refined xD; and 2009 brings a new, slightly larger Honda Fit with fresh styling, better performance and more interior space. The Toyota Yaris will also be tweaked before its expected redesign for model-year 2012. And Korean brands Hyundai and Kia won’t be idle. There’s also the prospect of a low-cost Chinese-sourced mini from newly independent Chrysler, though its timing is still a bit murky. With all this, the 2011 Ford Fiesta will have a lot to contend with, but it should be up to it, assuming the well-received Mazda 2 is any guide.

Honda nailed the minivan formula with the third generation of the Odyssey, which debuted in 2005. The size is in line with the competition from Chrysler and Toyota, there are plenty of interior features, and—our favorite part—the Odyssey can actually be called fun to drive. We’ll qualify that last statement with “for a minivan,” but still, the Odyssey has sharp reflexes and a comfortable, smooth ride.

All four trim levels, LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring, come with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine; the latter two feature a cylinder-deactivation system that shuts off two or three cylinders to save fuel when they’re not needed. Power goes through the front wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. The Odyssey doesn’t have trick folding second-row seats like those in the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, but the third-row seat folds flat into the floor in a 60/40 split.

The 2008 Azera delivers solid performance, a very roomy interior, a long list of safety features and an unmatched warranty. However, many consider the handling vague, and the exterior styling bland.

The 2008 Hyundai Azera is unique in this class for its balance of features and capabilities, combined with a relatively low price. The argument for the Hyundai's large car is simple: The Azera finishes in the top half of its class in our ratings in nearly every category, is available with a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and can be bought fully-equipped for under $30,000. It's a tremendous value. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman calls the Azera a "darn good product that undercuts the competition by a couple thousand dollars or more."

Hyundai is trying a similar tactic with its upcoming Genesis sedan. The Azera is front-wheel drive, while the Genesis sends its power to the rear wheels. The two cars occupy similar space in Hyundai's lineup for a similar price, but the Azera can be had for a slightly lower investment.

For 2008, Hyundai has cut the midlevel SE trim from the Azera lineup. Buyers now choose between a relatively well-equipped base-level GLS, and a Limited trim that adds enough luxury features to allow the Azera compete with some entry-level luxury sedans. Hyundai has also addressed some complains by retuning the Azera's suspension for 2008 to improve ride and handling. If you're interested in the Azera, the Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300 are also worth a look.

In recent months, we’ve had the opportunity to test a variety of hydrogen-powered prototypes, such as the Chevrolet Equinox fuel-cell vehicle and BMW’s Hydrogen-7, which goes the internal combustion route. But Honda’s FCX takes the technology to an entirely new level.

First seen at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda plans to begin leasing the FCX for $600 a month, and not just to carefully selected corporate fleets, but to everyday consumers. The costly experiment is also a risky one, exposing the Clarity to all the daily challenges faced by your typical motorist, from bad weather to fussy infants.

“The FCX Clarity is a shining symbol of the progress we've made with fuel cell vehicles and of our belief in the promise of this technology,” proclaims American Honda president and CEO Tetsuo Iwamura. “Step by step, with continuous effort, commitment and focus, we are working to overcome obstacles to the mass-market potential of zero-emissions hydrogen fuel-cell automobiles.”

While the first retail customers will still have to wait a few months, we were given the chance to take the FCX for a spin around Los Angeles, starting out in Santa Monica, then heading up the coast to fire-ravaged Malibu . During our time behind the wheel, we had the chance to put the fuel-cell vehicle through a variety of different situations, from city streets to open highways, charging up steep inclines and around twisty canyon roads. And our overall impression? Well, we’ll get to that, in a moment.

A hydrogen-powered jellybean

Honda has actually applied the FCX badge to several vehicles. The outgoing model is a chunky-looking Japanese hatchback. The new edition is decidedly more stylish — and roomy. Honda has learned a valuable lesson from its Japanese rival, Toyota , whose Prius is a distinctive visual standout. You won’t miss the Clarity, either, and during our drive, it seemed like everyone wanted a closer look.

The FCX is a futuristic jellybean, first impressions suggesting a cross between the new Honda Accord and the Prius. Toss in a dash of the Honda CR-Z concept vehicle that debuted in Tokyo, last month — at least the show car’s split rear glass, which folds over into the tailgate. If we had any complaint, surprisingly, it was rear visibility, despite the sedan’s expanse of glass.

Inside, the compact FCX would likely qualify as a full-size four-door; even with the driver’s seat set to handle my 6’2” frame, there was plenty of legroom in the back. The sedan’s instrument panel vaguely resembles that of the new Accord, with its stairstep layout. There’s a huge, high-res LCD for the built-in navigation system, or to display the complex power system at work underneath. The instrument panel centers around a flashing, multi-color cluster that looks a lot like Tokyo at night, and can be nearly as distracting, as you struggle to understand what the various fluorescent readouts signify.

Our test car had a surprising number of little fit-and-finish problems, but we’re willing to give Honda a pass, considering this is a prototype of an extremely low-volume, largely hand-built car. Nonetheless, we’re hoping for typically Honda-level refinement when the first cars actually reach customers.

The FCX is extremely well-equipped, overall, with niceties such as dual-zone digital climate control, adaptive (radar) cruise control, voice-activated navigation, and a sweet AM/FM/CD/XM audio system with a jack for your iPod or MP3 player. Oddly, while the doors and windows are power-operated, the seats are manual. Then again, maybe not, as weight clearly matters when you’re going for maximum mileage.

In terms of safety, the FCX Clarity is equally well-equipped, with six airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, active headrests, and a radar-guided collision mitigation system.

Under pressure

Though it’s extremely aerodynamic, the FCX uses a conventional steel body, with a steel chassis and aluminum subframe, rather than the costly, ultralight materials that could have been used. Even so, the numbers are impressive. The FCX delivers an estimated range of 270 miles on a tank full of hydrogen. Since it holds four kilograms of the stuff, that works out to an equated 68 miles per gallon. (The EPA considers a kilogram of hydrogen to equal a gallon of gas.)

A bit of a primer is called for here. A fuel cell “stack” consists of a series of permeable membranes coated with noble metals, including platinum, rhodium and palladium. The hydrogen passes through the membrane, in the process shedding an electron, the basic stuff of the electricity that runs a fuel-cell vehicle’s electric motor. When the hydrogen combines with air, it forms water, which you can spot coming out of the FCX tailpipe as either steam or a spray of liquid.

The latest-generation Honda stack, along with the rest of the fuel-cell system, is about 400 pounds lighter than in the earlier FCX, the stack itself now about a fifth the size of early stacks. The overall drive system, company officials note, is roughly the same size as a comparable gasoline-electric drivetrain. It’s also able to handle the worst heat a driver might experience in Southern California, as well as a low of -30 degrees Celsius (about -22 F).

Honda notably chose to go with a “low-pressure” fuel tank, storing those 4 kg of hydrogen at 350 bar, or 5000 psi. General Motors, with its new Equinox FCV, is opting for higher 700 bar/10,000 psi pressures, but that raises storage costs significantly, requires tremendous energy to compress the gas, and doesn’t quite double the amount of hydrogen you can store in a given space. The industry is likely to keep the storage debate going for a number of years.

Firing up the Clarity is simple: just press the start button. It takes a few seconds for the system to come alive, but once it does, you simply shift into gear, with an IP-mounted contraption that vaguely resembles a BMW 7-Series shifter.

Step on the throttle and you’re likely to be surprised by the Clarity’s aggressive launch. The system produces 100 kilowatts of power, with a modest additional assist from the onboard batteries, which operate much like those in today’s gas-electric hybrids. That works out to a seemingly modest 134 horsepower, but the numbers underrate the actual kick of an electric drive system, where you get maximum torque the moment the motor starts to turn.

From 0 to 30 mph, the FCX delivers some serious acceleration. It slacks off as you approach highway speed, but that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch. We were able to easily merge onto the congested I-10, in Santa Monica , and quickly soared to near 90 mph. Certainly, around town, the FCX Clarity will keep up with traffic.

Canyon agility

Later, as we headed up the busy Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu , we were impressed with the agility of the sedan, which smoothly zipped from lane-to-lane. As we turned off onto Malibu Canyon Road , the fuel-cell vehicle shot up the steep incline without any hesitation, weaving and bobbing through the fire-ravaged canyon about as nimbly as the new Accord. Credit the Clarity’s double-wishbone suspension – and Honda engineers who were able to package the hefty fuel cell components as low as possible. The stack, for example, is actually mounted below the sedan’s center console.

One of the most striking features of any fuel-cell vehicle is the distinct lack of traditional powertrain noises. Instead, you suddenly discover all sorts of sounds normally muffled beneath, like controls and pumps – especially the compressor driving air into the fuel-cell stack. The somewhat high-pitched noise, along with the sound of the drive’s electric motor, takes some time getting used to, though in the FCX, it’s a significant amount quieter than the screeching of earlier fuel-cell vehicles.

How many customers Honda hopes to attract when it starts leasing the FCX next year, it isn’t saying. The company is “waiting to gauge the market’s reaction,” insists U.S. marketing chief Will Walton. Several factors suggest the initial reaction is likely to be quite positive. GM was besieged by thousands of potential users of the fuel-cell Equinox, which is will loan out for three-month stints starting in early 2008. And the special Honda FCX Web site has crashed several times from all the demand, since the automaker announced the lease program at the L.A. Auto Show last week.

Though final details haven’t been released, the basics are simple: customers will pay $600 a month, over the course of three-year leases, a figure including both maintenance and insurance.

All well and good, but what about the hydrogen? Under pressure from the state, the auto industry has been flooding the California market with hydrogen prototypes, and that’s encouraging the development of a real service-station infrastructure. It also helps that there’s a ready supply of the gas, which is produced for the various refineries that dot the Southern California coast.

Honda officials expect as many as 30 hydrogen pumps to be available next year. The fuel should cost about $5 a kilogram, meanwhile, so on a per-mile basis, the FCX will actually prove more affordable than comparably-sized sedans (except, perhaps, the Prius). Refueling times, of about five minutes are similar to what it takes to fill up an empty gasoline tank.

While the first Clarity sedans will be leased in the L.A. area, Honda officials would like to extend the experiment to other parts of the country. While they declined to discuss firm plans, we would expect to see the lease program expand to Washington, D.C., and even the New York City area, if things go well. That would certainly give a better sense for how the FCX would operate in winter weather.

Would we drive an FCX? Absolutely. In fact, if we can convince Honda to deliver one to Detroit , we hope to offer an even more in-depth review, sometime in the near future. The Clarity may not be the future, but it’s certainly pointing in that direction.

The Canyon delivers good handling and a ruggedly attractive exterior, but places in the middle of its class because it can't match the power or interior accommodations of top competitors.

The 2008 GMC Canyon is an acceptable but not outstanding performer with rugged good looks, and falls mid-pack of the six ranked compact pickup trucks. On the whole, the automotive press likes the Canyon for work or play. New Car Test Drive says, "The Crew Cab can haul home a load of horse manure for the garden, then take the family out for dinner and a movie (after hosing out the bed, that is)."

But despite the overall praise, the Canyon is also seen as an underpowered truck with poor-quality interior materials that are not in line with its price. In fact, at higher trim levels, the Canyon costs about as much as larger GMC trucks. The Detroit News notes the base GMC Sierra and the Canyon are virtually the same price. "Against that backdrop, the two-wheel-drive Canyon Crew Cab SLE doesn't look like a great value." Adding to this sentiment, Car and Driver calls the sticker price "a shocker," saying, "I'd be more forgiving if there were some neat touches," but "I'd need something more than just increased agility to keep me out of a full-size truck." Adding to the disappointment is the fact that the Canyon's fuel economy is only average for the class.

The Canyon is available as a regular cab model, an extended cab, or as a crew cab. Regular and extended cab models are available with base, SL, and SLE trim packages, while crew cab models are available only with the SLE package. If you're shopping for a compact pickup, also check out the Nissan Frontier or Toyota Tacoma.

The 2008 Canyon has a rugged look that most appreciate, but it doesn't fare well when compared to the menacing stances of the class leaders. Still Car and Driver calls the Canyon "brawny but lovable," and says, "If you want a modern pickup that isn't scaled like the dump trucks of yesteryear, here's one that's worth a serious look." The H3 demonstrates terrific off-road prowess in a distinctive, rugged package, but can't match the on-road performance or comfort of many competitors. Consequently, it ranks in the bottom half of its class.

The 2008 Hummer H3 boasts great off-road capability, but mediocre highway performance means it ranks in the bottom half of its competitive class. The H3 "may be the baby bear of its clan," says Motor Week, "but it has all the DNA of the original. Indeed, we think it is just right." New for 2008 is the Alpha trim level, which comes with a V8 engine and the H3's luxury package. The H3 line also gets more standard safety equipment, including head-curtain side air bags and electronic stability control. Though the H3 is the least expensive of the Hummers, its sticker price still commands a premium. Plus, the new Alpha costs about $8,500 more than the base H3. Though it may be worth the price for serious off-road driving enthusiasts, the H3 only ranks in the bottom half of its class when compared to other off-road SUVs.

The Odyssey doesn’t have trick folding second-row seats like those in the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, but the third-row seat folds flat into the floor in a 60/40 split.

Verdict

The best minivan to drive, the Odyssey offers a smooth powertrain, handsome styling, and Honda build quality. The cabin is nicely appointed, and the van can be had with just about anything a family could ever want, from decadent stuff like a DVD entertainment system and a leather-lined cabin to minivan-crucial items such as a 115-volt power outlet and a conversation mirror to watch the kids in back.

What’s New for 2009

The exterior was freshened in 2008. For 2009, the cylinder-deactivation engine on the EX-L and Touring model gets a 3-hp increase in its power rating, up to 244—equal to that of the standard engine.

Highlights and Recommendations

As in other minivans, the price goes up according to features. So if you want power doors, rear-seat entertainment, navigation, and leather, you’ll have to pay the price. If you can cope with cloth seats, though, the EX comes with plenty of stuff: three-zone climate control, power doors, alloy wheels, and a power driver’s seat. Leather seats (heated for the front row) and a sunroof come standard on the EX-L, and this trim level is required if you want to option up to a navigation system or rear-seat entertainment. The Touring model is loaded, and priced as such, but the PAX System run-flat option should be avoided, considering the high replacement cost of the special tires.

Safety

Front, front side, and curtain airbags come standard, as do active head restraints in the front seats, stability control, and ABS with panic assist.

In ancient-financial times (say, in the year 2000), banks began offering small business customers the ability to bank online — for a price. Sometimes a hefty price.

You can probably guess what happened next. Business owners responded with a resounding silence. The last thing most people needed was an "opportunity" to pay for something that had been free.

Well, banks seem to have gotten the message. Fees have dropped sharply or have been eliminated on many services. The online banking
offerings have increased. And more businesses are doing at least some of their banking online, lured by convenience, the ability to track their own financial activities online, and the potential of saving time.

"We're now seeing a lot more features and functionalities for small business owners to do more online and to manage their cash flow," says Matthew Lehman, senior analyst with Watchfire Gomez Pro, a research company focusing on financial services.

Among the online offerings becoming more common:

1. Check imaging: About 70% of the banks surveyed by Watchfire in 2004 were offering business clients the option of getting online check imaging. "For the small business customer, this is like having account-tracking capabilities," says Lehman. "Small business owners can use this capability to look at their accounts and see which checks have been deposited and accepted."

2. Deposit ticket review: Another online feature some banks are offering: deposit tickets. "If you are handling a lot of checks, this is a valuable feature because it gives you the ability to go back and see what you were depositing," says Lehman.

Lehman says banks are making it easier for small business owners to link their business and personal accounts so they can make online transfers between accounts — rather than the old-fashioned method.

"We'll have a device in your business office, and you'll be able to scan a check and electronically deposit the funds without leaving your business unattended," says Davis.

This type of feature is similar to what retailers like Wal-Mart have when they take a customer's check, electronically scan it, get authorization for an electronic-funds transfer, and then give the approved and voided check back to the customer.

The services now available and under development reflect financial institutions' increased focus on the needs of smaller business clients. "At first, banks took regular consumer offerings and set them up for businesses," says Lehman. "Then they realized that the needs of consumers are not the same as the needs of a small business, so now they are adding things that are more germane
to small businesses."

Banks may offer basic services, such as the ability to see your account history or to make transfers for free, and then charge extra for such goodies as wires, ACH, tax payments and so on.

Of course, anyone involved in commerce over the Internet has to be aware of threats from "phishers" and other frauds trying to break into individual and business bank accounts. Currently consumers who report an electronic funds transfer problem within two days are generally liable for no more than $50 in losses from their accounts. Business accounts, however, don't get the same protection. If you're victimized and the bank determines that your security (or lack thereof) led to the loss, you could be out of luck. Software and firewalls as well as other security measures are essential for anyone doing business on the Internet.

Most of the online banking services offer ways for business customers to link parts of their banking activities and record keeping with information logged into Quick books, Microsoft Money and other financial programs.
